Description

Here is a meme that I did featuring my list of Top 10 favorite video games starring Sonic The Hedgehog, who has become one of my most favorite video game heroes for as long as I can remember. After being able to take a short break from posting my newer cartoon artwork recently, I was in the mood for working on another meme based on the video games that I still enjoy playing to this day, especially one that I would be able to post as a way of celebrating the 25th Anniversary of the Blue Blur. For each game that I featured in this meme I was able to include an image of the box art for each game as well as a checkered pattern for the background to match the theme; The games are also listed from left to right and bottom to top, with the game I chose as #1 on the lone space at the top. Thank you, and enjoy!

MY TOP 10 FAVORITE SONIC GAMES

#10 - Sonic Colors (Nintendo Wii) - As many gamers may already know, "Sonic Colors" is a game that was released exclusively on the Nintendo Wii that brought Sonic back to his classic game roots by delivering 2D-style gameplay to accompany the 3D-style gameplay that most Sonic games relied on since the days of the Sega Dreamcast. Anyway, the story for the game is about Sonic and Tails checking out an interstellar theme park built by their arch-enemy, Dr. Eggman, and they encounter a race of alien beings known as 'Wisps' that are able to assist Sonic by granting him special abilities such as moving at light speed and drilling through soil. I was able to get this game as a Christmas gift back in 2010, and I thought it was fairly decent for a Sonic game when playing it for the first time; The only minor issues I had when playing this game were the lack of certain power-ups that could have made the game feel more like a proper Sonic title such as shields that would prevent Sonic from losing rings when getting attacked by enemies, and the person who did the voice of Sonic in this game wasn't quite as good as Jason Griffith (the same guy who did the voice of Sonic in the cartoon series "Sonic X" as well as the Sonic games that have come out since 2005) in my opinion.  Even so, this is still a well-made Sonic video game that's worth getting if you own a Nintendo Wii.

#9 - Sonic 3D Blast (Sega Genesis) - Released on the Sega Genesis in 1996, this is one of the first Sonic games where we get to play as the Blue Blur in a three-dimensional style. The story for this game is about Dr. Eggman capturing the small birds known as 'Flickies' and turning them into robots that would help him search for the Chaos Emeralds, and it's up to Sonic to stop him as usual. At the time, the 3D-style gameplay was pretty new for players who wanted to check out their favorite video game hero in a new style, but Sega was able to do a fine job for such a game, and it was even developed by Traveller's Tales (the very same company that would go on to create the ever-popular Lego video game series). There was also a Sega Saturn version of the game that was released as well, which had CD-quality music and bonus stages that were a little more challenging yet fun. Even though both versions of the game were pretty much the same in terms of gameplay, I actually prefer playing the original version on the Sega Genesis because it's a little bit easier to collect the Chaos Emeralds, and there are no loading times involved. Above all, I still think it's a great Sonic game to play despite some of the negative reviews it has received from those who didn't enjoy it as much as I did.

#8 - Sonic Unleashed (Nintendo Wii) - If you want my opinion about this game, I think "Sonic Unleashed" is kind of a underrated game to play just because it's the one game where Sonic becomes a creature known as a 'Werehog'; He is transformed into this state after Dr. Eggman uses a machine on him that zaps the energy from the seven Chaos Emeralds and then uses the energy to split the planet apart, thus awakening an evil creature known as the Dark Gaia. Sonic is then accompanied by a small furry character that he names 'Chip' (since he couldn't remember his name after Sonic meets him), and they go out to restore the energy of the Chaos Emeralds while stopping both Dr. Eggman and the Dark Gaia. This game featured two types of stages to play: the Day Stages and the Night Stages. The Day Stages are the levels where you play as Sonic in his normal form, and they rely on speed; many people who have played this game tend to enjoy these type of levels more because they also featured 2D-style gameplay in some sections of each level. The Night Stages are the levels where you play as Sonic in his Werehog form, and they rely on platforming as well as beat-'em-up action; a lot of people claim that these levels aren't really fun to play, but I tend to enjoy playing them on the Wii version of the game because it's actually pretty fun to swing the Wii Remote and Nunchuck as a way of controlling Werehog Sonic's movements. I've also heard that the versions released on the Xbox 360 and Playstation 3 contained an extra level called Empire City, which may not be playable on the Wii version, but I still love to play it nonetheless.

#7 - Shadow The Hedgehog (Playstation 2, Nintendo Gamecube, Xbox) - I probably know what you're thinking right now... A lot of people might complain that this isn't really a Sonic game just because you play as a character other than Sonic, but it still does count as an official Sonic game, so I should explain what it is all about: You play as Sonic's arch-rival, Shadow The Hedgehog, who can't seem to remember what happened after the events of the game "Sonic Adventure 2", and he ends up getting involved with a race of evil alien creatures known as the Black Arms; The leader of the Black Arms, Black Doom, claims that he knows the secret to Shadow's past, and it's up to Shadow to decide whether he should stop the evil plans of the Black Arms and defeat Black Doom, or join them and help take over the world. The gameplay is actually not as bad as most people claim it to be, particularly because it featured responsive controls and Sonic-esque platforming gameplay elements. Even though Shadow is able to attack his foes with a variety of weapons (mostly guns), he is still able to use the same abilities as Sonic, such as the famous Homing Dash. Another reason that I like this game a lot is the fact that it's surprisingly dark for a Sonic game, and there's even a bit of swearing from some of the characters; Not to mention this game features a more in-depth look at Shadow's origin (including Prof. Gerald Robotnik not being Shadow's only creator), and I think that Sonic Team should create more games that involve the origins of other characters like Sonic and/or Rouge. Even so, this is one extremely underrated game that I totally recommend finding a copy of, especially if you think Shadow is just as cool as Sonic.

#6 - Sonic Advance 2 (Game Boy Advance) - In case anybody is unfamiliar with the Sonic Advance games, it was a trilogy of Sonic games that was released on the Game Boy Advance. Some people tend to complain that the games were a little different from the older 2D Sonic games, mainly because they rely on speed and/or exploration, and some people were even able to ignore them just because they weren't released on home consoles; If you ask me, those reasons I've mentioned are pretty silly and ridiculous because the Sonic Advance games are actually well-made platformers that allowed Sonic and friends to stay in the tradition of why the franchise was so great in the first place. Anyway, my most favorite game would have to be "Sonic Advance 2" because it was the first game in the trilogy I've ever played, and it's actually a bit easier when trying to find and collect the seven Chaos Emeralds (which was nearly impossible to do in the other two games, but that's just my opinion). Needless to say, "Sonic Advance 2" is also the game that had the debut of Cream The Rabbit and her Chao friend, Cheese; And let's not forget Vanilla The Rabbit, who has quite a fanbase as well. Despite what some people may think of this game, it is actually one of the best games I've ever played on the Game Boy Advance, and I also recommend checking it out whenever you can.

#5 - Sonic Generations (Xbox 360 / PlayStation 3) - Even though I've always been the kind of guy who prefers playing games on Nintendo and/or Sega consoles, this particular game actually made me want to get an Xbox 360 after they became more affordable a couple of years after the game was originally released, especially after realizing that it wasn't an entirely bad console after trying out some of the games released for it (though I wish I could say the same thing about Sony's game consoles since the PlayStation 2). Anyway, the story for the game involves Sonic and his friends getting trapped in a world where the Blue Blur is able to revisit locations from his past adventures, and he's even able to run into his Classic self from his glory days on the Sega Genesis; Both versions of Sonic become playable characters with their own unique styles of gameplay as they work together rescuing their friends and playing through various levels based on many recognizable locations from the past games. Needless to say, this was one of the newer Sonic games to come out that actually helped some gamers forget about the so-called atrosities of "Sonic The Hedgehog 2006", and it also proved that Sonic can still be an appealing video game hero despite all the unnecessary hate that he's received over the years (shame on you for being a hater). Speaking of which, there was also a version of the game that was released on the Nintendo 3DS, but it actually plays a little differently with a bunch of different levels from the past games featured in it; Either way, "Sonic Generations" is such an excellent game in the franchise that was made by people who knew how to make a Sonic game the right way.

#4 - Sonic The Hedgehog 2 (Sega Genesis) - Whenever somebody talks about this game, the first thing that probably comes to mind would have to be Miles "Tails" Prower, because this is the game that Sonic's faithful sidekick made his grand debut in. The plot for this game is very familiar to fans as well: Dr. Eggman is attempting to take over the world by using a large space station known as 'The Death Egg' (which is obviously a take on the Death Star from "Star Wars"), and it's up to Sonic and Tails to stop him. What makes this game so unique and fun is the fact that it can be played with two players - one player takes control of Sonic, and the other player can take control of Tails. There were also more levels to play in the game as well as more bosses to fight than in the first Sonic game. And also, this is one of a few Sonic games I can think of that you do not have to collect the seven Chaos Emeralds in order to beat the game properly. Believe it or not, "Sonic The Hedgehog 2" was actually the very first Sonic game that I've ever beaten, and it still remains as one of my favorite titles to play on the Sega Genesis.

#3 - Sonic The Hedgehog (Sega Genesis) - You were probably hoping that I was going to add this game to my list, and that it would be one of the higher ranking titles on my list as well. Anyway, this is the very first Sonic game that started it all, and it's still one of the best video games to play on the Sega Genesis. It was in this game that the world was introduced to the Blue Blur, and he became quite popular afterwards. Because it was the first game in the series, the plot was very simple: Dr. Ivo Robotnik (AKA Dr. Eggman) is capturing small animals and turning them into robots that would help him take over the world, and it's up to Sonic to put an end to the villain's evil scheme for the first of countless times. Everything about this game is just too excellent for me to describe, especially the music, since I tend to have fond memories of me playing this game each time I hear the Green Hill Zone level music playing. If you have never played this game before, I strongly suggest that you check it out because it is still considered by many as one of the most popular video games of all time.

#2 - Sonic 3 & Knuckles (Sega Genesis) - If case you're probably wondering... Yes, this does count as an actual Sonic game. In fact, this game is basically a combination of two seperate Sonic games that were released a few months apart on the Sega Genesis in 1994: "Sonic The Hedgehog 3" and "Sonic & Knuckles". It was originally played by locking the cartridge for one game onto the cartridge for another, which was something quite revolutionary at the time.  Anyway, the story for this game takes place not too long after the events of "Sonic The Hedgehog 2": Dr. Eggman's space station, the Death Egg, crash lands on Angel Island, which is the home of Knuckles The Echidna (who makes his debut in this game). Sonic and Tails then set out to Angel Island to stop him from rebuilding the Death Egg, and Dr. Eggman tricks Knuckles into believing that Sonic and Tails are the bad guys, in which he acts as their enemy by activating traps and even stealing the seven Chaos Emeralds. What makes this game so unique is the fact that it was originally meant to be one huge adventure, and due to the limitations of software at the time, Sega decided to release the game as two separate titles. Right after you beat Launch Base Zone (the final level of "Sonic The Hedgehog 3"), you then immediately continue at Mushroom Hill Zone (which happens to be the first level of "Sonic & Knuckles"); If you've managed to collect the seven Chaos Emeralds before getting this far, you then have to collect the Super Emeralds whenever you go back to the Special Zones. Not only are you actually able to play through the levels of "Sonic The Hedgehog 3" as Knuckles in this game, but you also get to play through the levels of "Sonic & Knuckles" as Tails. This game is so terrific to play that some people would even consider it as one of Sonic's greatest adventures of all time.

#1 - Sonic Adventure 2 Battle (Nintendo Gamecube) - A lot of people would probably be surprised and even ask why this particular title is considered my favorite Sonic video game of all time. Well, I can actually think of many reasons why I enjoy playing this game so very much, and I think I'll explain in my own words what it's all about... "Sonic Adventure 2 Battle" is a re-release of the game "Sonic Adventure 2", which originally came out during the final days of the Sega Dreamcast back in 2001. It should be noted that this game was one of the first Sonic games to be released on a Nintendo game system. At first, I was kinda skeptical about the idea of playing Sega's video games on a Nintendo game system, but when I first played "Sonic Adventure 2 Battle" on my Nintendo Gamecube that I got for Christmas in 2002, I really enjoyed playing the game and I couldn't get enough of it afterwards. Because it's kind of a re-release of a recent Sonic game, you might even say that this game features the debut of two popular Sonic characters: Shadow The Hedgehog and Rouge The Bat. I won't bother explaining the entire plot for this game (mainly because it's very long and kinda complex to describe in this review alone), but I think the story is very exciting for a Sonic game and I really enjoy watching the cutscenes as well. The only fault that most people notice when playing the game is the camera angles that are hard to control at times, but they don't seem to bother me that much each time I play through the game. One unique feature in this game that I still like to this day is the Chao Garden, which allows you to raise creatures called Chao, and you can transfer them onto your Game Boy Advance for on-the-go gameplay. Above all, "Sonic Adventure 2 Battle" is a game that I've played and beaten dozens of times since my senior year at high school, and it still remains as one of my most favorite Sonic video games of all time.
